The Cass Scenic Railroad in Pocahontas County is a popular tourist train that runs on old logging tracks built in 1900. It once carried red spruce trees to nearby mills. Today, restored Shay and Heisler engines from the early 1900s pull passenger cars up steep mountains.

After the mill closed in 1960, the state bought the railroad and opened Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in 1963. The train climbs steep grades using special engines and switchbacks, stopping at Whittaker Station with a display of 1940s logging life. At the top, Bald Knob offers amazing views.

The park now includes the town of Cass, museums, shops, and lodging in old company houses.
