Modern towboats use radar, sonar, and satellite systems to move goods cheaply and efficiently. Rivers like the Ohio, Monongahela, Big Sandy, and Kanawha are still important for shipping in West Virginia. Each year, hundreds of millions of tons of cargo are moved, mostly coal and coke, followed by petroleum, sand, gravel, and chemicals. Huntington is the largest inland port in the U.S. by tonnage.
