By the early 18th century, the focus of exploration shifted towards land acquisition and settlement schemes. One notable person in this was Louis Michel, from Bern, Switzerland. In 1703, Michel, who was affiliated with Swiss settlement promoters, sought to secure support from Baron Christopher de Graffenreid, a key figure in the colonization efforts.

In 1706, Michel traveled with three French traders to explore lands around the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers at present Harpers Ferry, an area of strategic importance. Despite promising prospects in Virginia, the Swiss eventually chose a more attractive offer from North Carolina.
