This Mannington (Marion County) native was a key figure in promoting the hammered dulcimer. In 1928, his uncle gave him his first one, and Fluharty taught himself to play hymns, patriotic songs, and old tunes.

Fluharty became known as "the dulcimer man" for his performances at schools, churches, and public events. His charm and love for music made him popular, especially during the folk revival of the 1960s and '70s. He founded the Mountaineer Dulcimer Club and traveled to other states as an "ambassador of goodwill." In 1986, he received the state's highest folklife honor, the Vandalia Award, for his contributions to West Virginia's music.
