Another feature left over from the cold climate of the Ice Age is bogs, which we often call glades. Special glades are found at high altitudes in the mountains. Even though the glaciers didn't cover these spots, the climate was much colder, allowing these unique habitats to form. These cold, wet areas are truly special because they hold plants and animals you usually find much farther north, like in Canada. They are unique and often can't be found anywhere else this far south. Some of our largest and most famous glades include Cranberry Glades, Canaan Valley, and Cranesville Swamp (pictured).
