Crumb was famous for his notated scores, many so visually beautiful that they appeared in museum exhibitions. In a 2002 interview with All Things Considered, Crumb said that such notation was freeing for him and for the musicians who played his work. "They're not thinking of aligning parts in a vertical way," he said. "They're floating clear of that."
