Things moved quickly during the first week of September. To support the protesters, 3,500 coal miners went on an unauthorized wildcat strike. The strike spread fast, closing down many mines in southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. The miners, who were used to organizing protests, joined the picket lines and helped make the protests even larger and more intense.
