Buckles was the last surviving American veteran of World War I. He lived in West Virginia for many years and died at age 110.

At age 16, Buckles lied about his age to join the Army in 1917. He served in France as an ambulance driver and helped return prisoners after the war. Later, he worked for a steamship company and was captured by the Japanese in World War II, spending over three years in prison camps.

He moved to Charles Town, Jefferson County, in 1954. Buckles received many honors, including France’s Legion of Honor and recognition from U.S. presidents. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
