Kyle was a Medal of Honor recipient from Boone County. He joined the Army in 1939 and earned medals for bravery in World War II. After the war, he returned home but later reenlisted and served in Korea.
In the Korean War, Kyle helped rescue wounded soldiers and was promoted to lieutenant for his leadership. On February 16, 1951, he bravely led an attack near Suwon, South Korea, taking out enemy positions before being killed in action.
Kyle is buried in South Charleston. A school and a bridge have been named in his honor. His wife and daughters received his Medal of Honor in 1952.
