At the start of the Great Depression, more West Virginians started taking up farming again. But by the mid-1930s, many had given up their mountain farms for good because it was too hard to make a living. They moved in droves to towns, cities, and other states to find work. Government farming programs helped with soil and land use but didn’t do much to support West Virginia's small farms.
