This operatic soprano from Sutton (Braxton County) was the first West Virginian to perform at the Metropolitan Opera (The Met) in New York. Her career took off on December 26, 1935, when she sang the main role of Cio-Cio-San in Madame Butterfly at the Met.

She had studied music at the Cincinnati Conservatory and the Juilliard School of Music, and also trained in France and Germany. Beginning in 1931, she was in the Berlin State Opera. She started with small parts but learned many of the roles. This preparation paid off. When her chance came, she knew the entire role and needed no rehearsals.

Fisher spent three seasons in Berlin but also sang in the United States. Besides the Met, she performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. She was the leading soprano at the Paris Comic Opera during two summers. In 1937, she was chosen to sing at President Franklin Roosevelt's second inauguration.
