This Wayne County native and rockabilly up-and-coming star had just had a big hit it in Cleveland with "Dark Hollow" when a serious car accident prematurely interrupted his career in 1960. He and his wife, Doris, moved to Putnam County, where they raised five kids, and he went back to his old job of truck driving.
Music still called to him, though, so he started The Dark Hollow Boys with Hazel Paul and Doris singing. Bill and Doris also built a recording studio from the ground up, called Midway Recording Studio, near Hurricane. They recorded some of the very first music by Squire Parsons and his group, the Calvarymen.
At his studio, Browning produced hundreds of albums, mostly gospel music but also some bluegrass. He also started a company called Marbone to help distribute the music.
