Excerpt about the Buffalo Creek Disaster, from West Virginia: A Film History (0:53)

"What I remember is I heard the phone jingling. I woke up and saw all my neighbors running all around up there. I looked out the front door and saw the water coming so I grabbed the baby and woke up Randy. We grabbed a blanket and housecoat and out the back door we went. By that time, water was knee-deep. We were standing on the tracks, and water was going all around us, and everybody was helping everybody. That's all there was to it. Everybody was grabbing clothing from everywhere they could find it. People were helping other people get in houses. Then we came out yesterday morning about 8:30, and my dad and brother are still up there looking for my mom. We haven't heard anything from her."
