Gerald Milnes, a folklorist and fiddler, is the former folk art coordinator of the Augusta Heritage Center. His works include the books Granny Will Your Dog Bite and Other Mountain Rhymes and Signs, Cures and Witchery: German Appalachian Folklore. His work also includes 16 documentaries about folklife and 18 recordings of traditional music. He was a 2026 National Heritage Fellow, the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. That year, he also received the Bess Lomax Hawes National Heritage Fellowship, which annually recognizes one person nationally who has made significant contributions to the excellence, vitality and public appreciation of the folk and traditional arts.
