Mountwest Community & Technical College started in 1975 as part of Marshall University and was first called Marshall Community College. In 1991, its name was changed to reflect its focus on job training and technical programs.

In 2003, it became an independent college and was renamed Mountwest Community & Technical College in 2010. It now offers over 40 associate degree programs.

In 2012, the college moved to a new building in Huntington. It also runs special programs such as the Center for Culinary Arts and the Inland Waterways Academy.
