The most famous landmark of the Corridor System is the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayette County. It stands 876 feet above the river, making it the third-highest bridge in the U.S. Until 2003, it had the longest single-arch steel span in the world.

Before the bridge was built, crossing the gorge took over 45 minutes. Construction started in 1973 and took more than three years. The bridge is 3,030 feet long, weighs 88 million pounds, and was made with special steel that rusts for protection without needing paint.

The bridge opened in 1977, cutting travel time across the gorge to just one minute. Some 16,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. It has led to an economic boom in outdoor recreation in the region and has become a great source of pride to West Virginians, who celebrate its anniversary annually on Bridge Day.
