Pike Knob Preserve is a protected area of 1,095 acres located on North Fork Mountain in Pendleton County. It is owned by the Nature Conservancy.
Pike Knob rises nearly 4,300 feet above sea level. From the preserve, you get amazing views in all directions. You can look down over the fields of Germany Valley and see gorgeous landmarks like Spruce Knob and Dolly Sods to the west.
The preserve is home to West Virginia's only natural, untouched red pine forest. This is the furthest south this type of forest naturally grows. It also contains excellent examples of grass balds and dwarf pine barrens (where trees grow very small due to harsh conditions). Many rare plants thrive here, including the bristly rose (the southernmost place it naturally grows) and the Appalachian oak fern.
