Smoke Hole Caverns is a commercial cave in Grant County, about eight miles west of Petersburg. It opened for tours in 1940 and is one of the most-visited caves in West Virginia.

It's located at the western end of the North Fork Mountain water gap (where the river cuts through the mountain). Geologically, it's unique because it formed along rock layers (limestone) that were pushed and tilted into a vertical position by Earth's movements.

The cave is known for its incredible decorations, like long rows of stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The largest room is called the "Room of a Million Stalactites." The main passage is nearly 1,600 feet long and reaches heights of over 100 feet.

The public tour covers about 500 feet of the main passage. The cave is named after the nearby Smoke Hole Canyon of the South Branch of the Potomac River.
