Tensions between the Hatfields and McCoys grew even stronger during the spring 1880 elections at Blackberry Creek in Pike County. Rose Anna McCoy, Randolph's daughter, left the election grounds with Johnse Hatfield, Devil Anse's son, who was visiting from Logan County. Devil Anse thought Johnse was being held against his will by the McCoys and led an armed rescue to get him back, which made the situation worse. Rose Anna and Johnse had an on-and-off relationship that may have resulted in an illegitimate child, which angered both families for years. This part of the story was later romanticized by storytellers, who turned it into a "Romeo and Juliet" type of love story.
