Some people believe the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys started because of the 1865 murder of Randolph McCoy’s brother, Harmon. Harmon was a Union soldier during the Civil War, and his death is thought to be linked to the violence from bushwhackers, who often fought in the region. However, others believe that Harmon was actually killed by Devil Anse Hatfield’s uncle, Jim Vance.
