After the killings in 1882, the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys simmered as the McCoys tried, but failed, to have the Hatfields arrested and tried in court. The governor of Kentucky even requested the extradition of the Hatfields, but West Virginia Governor E. Willis Wilson refused. At times, it seemed like there might be an armed conflict between the two states. In gratitude for Governor Wilson's support, Devil Anse Hatfield named one of his sons after him. Willis Hatfield, Devil Anse’s last surviving son, is shown here in 1970 at age 82.
