This Wood County native had a solid Major League Baseball career—but he's best remembered for being one of Babe Ruth’s first roommates. A natural athlete, Hoblitzell played for the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox, winning World Series titles for the Sox in 1915 and 1916.
He earned the nickname “Doc” after getting a dentistry degree while playing pro ball. In 1918, he joined the Army Dental Corps during World War I, ending his major league career.
After baseball, Hoblitzell managed minor league teams, hosted a radio show, wrote a sports column, and served as Wood County commissioner and sheriff. He lived his later years at Henderson Hall near Williamstown.
Today, he’s remembered for having had a somewhat calming effect on "Babe" Ruth in Boston and by baseball card collectors—his rare 1911 card is one of the most valuable of its kind.
