Wheeling native Jesse Burkett was the first West Virginian elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He hit better than .400 in three seasons, something accomplished by only Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby. He finished his 16-year major league career with a .342 batting average. His best season came in 1895 with the Cleveland Spiders, when he hit .423; led the league in hits (235), runs (149), and steals (47); and helped Cleveland win the Temple Cup, baseball's top prize at the time. He later won a World Series ring as a coach for the New York Giants (1921). He also played for the New York Giants, St. Louis Perfectos/Cardinals, St. Louis Browns, and Boston Americans
