Parkersburg native Alfred Earle “Greasy” Neale was one of West Virginia’s best all-around athletes. At West Virginia Wesleyan College, he starred in football, basketball, and baseball. After graduating in 1915, he coached the football team while still playing on it.

Neale played pro football with the Canton Bulldogs alongside Jim Thorpe. He was also a solid baseball player. He was an outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies from 1916 to 1924, appearing in 768 games and finishing with a .259 batting average. In the infamous 1919 World Series—later found to be rigged by some Chicago White Sox players—Neale hit .357 for the Reds.

He later coached the Philadelphia Eagles to two NFL championships.
