This Bethany native was one of the best football players in West Virginia University history. He started at Bethany College as a prep student before moving to WVU, where he played football from 1915 to 1917 and in 1919.
Rodgers was named an All-American in 1916, 1917, and 1919. In 1919, he led the nation in scoring with 147 points. He ran for 42 touchdowns and passed for 24 more, making 66 total—more than any other WVU player at the time. He also starred in basketball and baseball.
Rodgers served WVU for 40 years as a coach and professor. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1953.
