The East River is a small but important waterway that begins near the rail yards in Bluefield. Despite its name, it's more like a large creek. It flows straight for 23 miles northeast through Mercer County before joining the New River in Virginia. The river flows through a narrow valley that has become a crucial transportation corridor.

Railroads and busy highways (like U.S. 460) follow the East River because its straight valley offers an easy path westward through the mountains. Historically, the river also powered local gristmills.
