The 67.7-mile-long Pocatalico River starts near Looneyville (Roane County) and winds through four counties before joining the Kanawha River in Putnam County.

Thought to be an old Indian name, the Pocatalico is often shortened to just the "Poca River."

Historically, the area has been important for its natural resources. Coal was discovered along the river in 1798, and the surrounding land was also heavily timbered in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
