Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper were one of West Virginia’s most popular husband-and-wife country music teams. Both from Randolph County, Wilma Lee married Stoney Cooper in 1941. Known for their mountain sound, their band—the Clinch Mountain Clan—featured a fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and banjo. Stoney was a skilled fiddle player, and Wilma Lee often played guitar or banjo while singing.
They performed on West Virginia radio stations WMMN in Fairmont and at WWVA in Wheeling. Later, they spent 20 years at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Some of their biggest hits were “Come Walk With Me,” “Big Midnight Special,” and gospel favorites like “Walking My Lord Up Calvary Hill.”
After Stoney passed away in 1977, Wilma Lee kept performing and became a bluegrass favorite. Their daughter, Carol Lee, also had a successful music career as a backup singer for the Grand Ole Opry. In 2008, Wilma Lee and Stoney were inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.
