This Braxton County native holds the national high school record for most points in a game. While playing for Burnsville High School, he scored 135 points in one game on January 26, 1960. His coach wanted him to get noticed by college scouts.

He later attended the University of Richmond on an academic scholarship, though he didn’t start on the basketball team. His record-breaking game is still a source of pride in Burnsville.
