Earl Lloyd was the first Black player to play in an NBA game. He made history on October 31, 1950, when he played for the Washington Capitols against the Rochester Royals. Though he scored just six points, his presence opened the door for future Black players.

Lloyd was born in 1928 in Virginia and starred at West Virginia State College (now University), leading his team to two championships. He later served in the Army during the Korean War before returning to the NBA. Lloyd won a championship with the Syracuse Nationals and later played for the Detroit Pistons.

He faced racism during his career but stayed strong and inspired others. After retiring, he became the NBA’s first Black assistant coach. Lloyd was honored by the Basketball Hall of Fame for his leadership and courage.
