Boyd is considered one of West Virginia’s greatest high school basketball coaches. He led Northfork High School to eight straight state championships from 1974 to 1981—a state and national record—and nine titles in 15 years. Known for fast-paced, high-scoring teams, Boyd finished his coaching career with a 446–83 record. He later served on the McDowell County Board of Education and county commission. Boyd was named West Virginia Coach of the Year in 1976 and entered the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1983.
