This Arbovale (Pocahontas County) native taught English and Latin at Green Bank High School from 1932 to 1964 and created West Virginia’s first conservation class, helping students plant trees in the Monongahela National Forest.

Blackhurst wrote magazine articles and novels about local history and nature. His most popular book was Riders of the Flood (1954), about the timber boom in the Greenbrier Valley. Other books included Sawdust In Your Eyes, Of Men and A Mighty Mountain, and Mixed Harvest. A collection of his poetry, Afterglow, was published after his death.

He helped create Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and was its first onboard guide, teaching visitors about the area’s history and geology.
