Mrs. Alex. McVeigh Miller (her pen name) was a romance novelist in the late 1800s and early 1900s. She wrote 80 dime novels between 1881 and 1915 and became very well known.
Born in Virginia, she lost her first husband and child within two years. After returning home, she began writing short stories. In 1878, she married Alexander McVeigh Miller and moved to Fayette County. To help support the family, she returned to writing. Her big success came with The Bride of the Tomb in 1883.
Her earnings helped her build a mansion in Alderson and support her husband's political career. She divorced him in 1908 and moved to Boston, and then to Florida.
