This poet from Kanawha County learned poetry by listening to her mother and could recite Shakespeare and Chaucer before she could read. Her first published poem, "Appalachia" (1970), is her most popular. She published two poetry books, Appalachia, My Land (1973) and Appalachia (1977), and read her poems at various universities, including Harvard. One of her poems was used in a TV special based on The Waltons.
