This Webster Springs native, who later lived in Gassaway, wrote six novels during the Great Depression, often focusing on mountain life, the lumber industry, and the struggles of working people.

His most important book, Hawk’s Nest (1941), was based on a real tragedy during the building of a Fayette County tunnel. The book was printed but never officially released, possibly due to pressure from powerful companies and politicians. In 1970, 24 years after Skidmore's death, Richwood publisher Jim Comstock printed Hawk’s Nest.
