Grubb's family lost much of their wealth living in Moundsville during the Great Depression, and this struggle influenced his writing, which often criticized powerful people and big business.

Grubb wanted to be an artist and studied design, but he also wrote radio plays and stories. His first big success was The Night of the Hunter (1953), a thrilling novel that was made into a classic movie. He thought his next novel, A Dream of Kings (1954), was his best work.

Grubb wrote many books about Appalachia and social issues. One book, Shadow of My Brother (1956), was about a tragic event in Mississippi. His last novel, Ancient Lights (published after his death), explored new ideas about time and characters.

He wrote 11 books in total.
