This Kentucky native studied religion at Wellesley College and later attended Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary.
In 1951, she wrote Dope!, a street play performed in East Harlem with local, untrained actors. It was seen by thousands. Lee believed acting could help people show their true selves. She later started SALT (Soul and Latin Theater), also using local actors.
In 1970, she moved to Summers County to explore her Appalachian roots. There, she started Eco Theater, which turned real stories from local people into plays. Some of her works include Four Men and a Monster, John Henry, and The Hinton Play.
