This Fairmont native became famous in 1959 with his first novel, A Separate Peace, based on his time at Phillips Exeter Academy during World War II. He later studied at Yale University.

A Separate Peace is a coming-of-age story often compared to The Catcher in the Rye. It became a modern classic, winning the Rosenthal Award and the William Faulkner Award.

Knowles also wrote Morning in Antibes, Indian Summer, Phineas: Six Stories, and Peace Breaks Out. His novel A Vein of Riches is set in a fictional version of Fairmont.
