In 1943, McPherson became West Virginia’s youngest poet laureate, at age 22. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he moved to Charleston with his family in 1937 and later graduated from West Virginia University with a sociology degree. While serving in the Army during World War II, he learned that his poem “West Virginia” had been selected for the state’s highest poetry honor. After the war, he continued writing poetry, published his only novel, Goodbye Rosie (1965), and contributed poems to several literary magazines. Although he never published a collection of his own work during his lifetime, his daughter arranged for a small volume to be published in 2005.
