This Lewisburg native grew up on a dairy farm in Greenbrier County. He studied at Princeton and the University of Iowa. Benedict has written several short story collections, including Town Smokes, The Wrecking Yard, and Miracle Boy, as well as the novel Dogs of God. His work has been featured in major magazines like Esquire and in award-winning anthologies. He has won many honors, including the Steinbeck Award and the Nelson Algren Award.

Some of his stories have been made into short films, and his plays have been performed at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre. He also writes screenplays and helped create a musical version of The Scarlet Letter in 2016.

Benedict is a professor of English at Southern Illinois University.
