Myers lived in Martinsburg from birth until he was three, when his mother died. Then, he was raised by foster parents in Harlem in New York City’. He loved to read but kept it a secret from other kids.
A teacher encouraged him to write, but family problems made him drop out of high school at 17. He joined the army and later began writing stories.
He wrote over 85 books for kids and teens, focusing on issues facing minority youth. Myers won the Newbery Medal for Scorpions and the Printz Award for Monster. He was named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature in 2012 and spent two years promoting reading.
