Myers was born in Tucker County with severe disabilities. He never walked, went to school, or weighed more than 60 pounds, but he taught himself and became a poet.

He started writing at 16, using a typewriter he couldn’t lift. Influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and other poets, Myers kept writing even after facing rejection. His poems were later published in local papers and magazines, including The West Virginia Review, where he became assistant editor.

In 1927, he was named West Virginia’s first poet laureate and served for 10 years. He published two poetry books: The Quick Years (1926) and Cross and Crown (1951).
