This Ohio native spent most of her life near Wheeling. She graduated from Ohio State University in 1927 and studied at Columbia University. She was married to Robert Hannum, president of Fostoria Glass Company.

Hannum wrote stories about life in the Appalachian Mountains. Her first novel, Thursday April, came out in 1931. One of her most famous books, Roseanna McCoy (1947), was about the Hatfield-McCoy Feud and was made into a 1949 movie. She also wrote Look Back with Love, a memoir about growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Other books included The Hills Step Lightly, The Gods and One, The Mountain People, and Paint the Wind, about Navajo people. Her book Spin a Silver Dollar became a radio play and was later published in other countries.
