Royall was one of America’s first female journalists. She grew up on the frontier, moving to Monroe County at age 17. She received an uncommon education for a woman at the time. She married Revolutionary War veteran William Royall, who encouraged her learning.

After his death in 1812, she moved to Charleston. She lost her inheritance and began writing to support herself. She traveled across the U.S., publishing 11 books about the people and places she saw. In Washington, D.C., she started a bold newspaper called Paul Pry, followed by The Huntress, where she spoke out about politics and justice. She believed strongly in free speech and a united America.
