Aegert was a photographer from Helvetia (Randolph County). His parents, Swiss immigrants Gottfried and Marianna Aegerter, came to the area in 1885. Gottfried, a farmer and amateur photographer, taught Walter the craft. Together, they built a studio and darkroom on their farm, creating glass plate photographs of local families, farms, celebrations, and everyday life from 1890 to 1930. Walter’s collection, now preserved at the West Virginia State Archives and West Virginia University, offers a vivid record of this small German Swiss community.
