Gaylord was a sculptor from Clarksburg and a World War II paratrooper. After the war, he studied art and worked as a stonecutter before opening his own studio. He is best known for creating The Column, a group of 19 large steel soldiers that make up the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The memorial shows soldiers from all backgrounds and was dedicated in 1995. Gaylord also made statues of people ranging from President Calvin Coolidge to William Shakespeare.
