This Berkeley County native was best known for painting the Old West. He studied art in Maryland and Germany. After returning to the U.S., he worked as an illustrator in New York and painted scenes of West Virginia. In 1906, he traveled to New Mexico and focused on painting the western landscape and people. He became one of America’s top realist painters. Leigh also went on safaris in Africa and helped create exhibits for the American Museum of Natural History. He was elected to the National Academy of Design shortly before he died.
