This photographer was born in Germany and moved to West Virginia as a child. As a teen, he lived in an artist colony in Preston County, where he started taking photos of local scenes for postcards. Even First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt became a fan of his postcards.

Wentzel worked for National Geographic from 1937 to 1985, traveling the world and photographing places like Nepal and African tribal weddings. He took photos of West Virginia for the magazine, wrote the book Washington by Night, and won many awards.
