This New York City-born sculptor lives in Sutton. He started carving wood and stone but now mainly works with bronze, crystal, and metal. His sculptures appear in many places, including hospitals and courthouses. Some of his more prominent works honor Senator Robert C. Byrd in the West Virginia State Capitol and fallen law officers, outside the Culture Center, both in Charleston. Hopen also has art in New York, Baton Rouge, and other cities. He and his wife, sculptor Ai Qiu Chen, have studios in West Virginia and China.
