This folk artist from Elkview (Kanawha County) served in the Marines during World War II before becoming a Methodist minister. Hayes loved carving and became a master at it, creating detailed wooden figures, often with tiny people stacked or in sports scenes. He used special tools and liked working with basswood. His art was shown in Washington and New York, won top state awards, and is featured in the West Virginia State Museum.
